Tandem Bakery

Founded in 2012 by Beth Gherlein and David Tyson

One warm August night in 2011, we went looking for a snack to satisfy a sweet craving, but limited vegan and gluten-free options in Missoula left us hungry for a bakery of our own.

The rest, so they say, is history.

That winter we took our tiny savings account and threw it, along with a whole lot of love, into this project. During menu testing, we realized that many of our friends and family felt a similar frustration when dietary restrictions left them out of celebratory desserts or kept them from their favorite comfort foods. We wanted to bring everyone to the table without sacrificing taste and texture, so we set out to create gluten-free and vegan items to rival any traditional baked good. We have been baking for Missoulians with dietary restrictions ever since our first season at the Clark Fork Farmer’s Market in 2012.

In 2014, we expanded to wholesale and began supplying Missoula area restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores with our vegan and gluten-free breads and pastries. In February of 2022 we opened our café at 1221 Helen Avenue. We are thrilled to be located in such a historic space, in the heart of Missoula, at the base of Mount Sentinel, just steps from the University of Montana. And we are beyond grateful to our customers and community for supporting our business and believing in our vision.

We make delicious food for everyone

At Tandem, we believe conscious food choices mean valuing the health of our customers, our community, and our planet.

Everything we make is gluten-free and produced in our dedicated gluten-free facility. We are also proudly vegan, we use no animal products in our baking and we source only plant-based ingredients. Additionally, we prioritize local and seasonal ingredients and we purchase fresh fruit and produce from small-scale Montana farmers whenever possible.

We’re thrilled to be baking right here in Missoula, where a supportive and adventurous food community has nurtured our business from the beginning, and where we’re honored to be raising our kids surrounded by mountains and rivers.
